10,000 Shot Challenge
What is a 10,000 puck challenge?
10,000 Pucks is designed to allow players to track their shots 365 days a year. This fall we are running a challenge to improve your off-ice skills — the challenge runs from Sept 1 - Dec 20th.
Have a player who just cannot get enough and is constantly taking shots in the garage, stick handling in the living room and putting in "the time" in other ways ... have them potentially earn some rewards for it.
Players can begin tracking shots any time.
Shots may be tracked on any method so long as there is a documented log and added to a user created profile on hockeyshare.com. Our goal with this challenge is not simply focused on the quantity of shots, but on setting and achieving goals for hockey players. Best of all, 10k Pucks is free for all users.
Please note:
A) This is 100% optional participation. If your player chooses not to participate, it will not hinder any decisions made on playing time or anything else, this is solely to: (a) give players incentive/rewards to put in the work; (b) see the speed & accuracy increase (c) help to get them off their techno gadgets and (d) have some fun!
B) If you do not have the tools at home to complete this challenge, we suggest using a buddy system or having a chat with one of your coaches.

Coaches Input for a Successful Challenge
1. Guidelines
- Be honest with yourself, be honest with the contest and log the actual time you put in
- ***Shoot at a specific target***
- You will only improve with practice
- Use types of shots appropriate for age level Wrist shot, Snap shot, Backhand shot and Slap shot
- Incorporate stick handling — 15 minutes of stick handling equals 50 shots **Stick handle with your head up**
2. Equipment needed
- Pucks
- Stick (may want to use a smaller stick if shooting in shoes, regular length if on rollerblades)
- Stick handling ball (golf ball or store bought)
- Smooth shooting surface
- Net or backstop (a hanging tarp works well)
- Please ... no broken windows
3. Shooting
- 8U Mites — 10-20ft from net (5-12ft for backhand)
- 10U Squirt — 15-25ft from net (10-15' for backhand)
- 12U Pee Wee — 20-35ft from net (15-20' for backhand)
- 14U Bantam — 35ft from net (20' for backhand)
4. Stick Handling
- 15 minutes of stick handling = 50 shots in any category
- Be creative — make an obstacle course, jump on one foot, wear rollerblades
- Refer to USA Hockey website: www.usahockey.com
- Drills can be found under the Players tab, then under Youth, then off- ice space.
5. Tips
- Regular schedule — better to practice for a short time everyday rather than once in awhile
- Complete challenge with friends (buddy up) * note: there would be the 1 winner
- Spend extra time on your weakness (backhand)
- Heap up when shooting — shift your weight
- Practice for accuracy — use targets (paper plates, magnetic etc.)
- Shoot 5% from unusual positions ( wrong or 1 foot, one or both knees, seated, different hand spacing, etc.)
- Pull the puck to your body and shoot
- Shot begins with puck at the side of the body and behind back foot
- Add targets to your net. Target magnents or even solo cups / paper plates can be hung as a target.
- Cup the puck
- Good follow through
- Get your shot up - Shoot for bar-down.
- Shoot HARD !!
